Formula Overview
Augmented version of Xiao Yao San with Mu Dan Pi and Zhi Zi added. Used when Liver Qi constraint has transformed into Heat, presenting with irritability, heat signs, PMS with heat, or mild deficiency Heat.
Therapeutic Principle
Traditionally selected when Liver constraint has transformed into Heat, with irritability, flushing or menstrual heat signs, adding Mu Dan Pi and Zhi Zi to the base — a cooling extension of Xiao Yao San, and quite unlike Chai Hu Shu Gan San, which moves Qi without nourishing Blood or clearing Heat.

Clinical Perspective
Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Dan Zhi Xiao Yao San) is chosen when heat signs accompany Liver constraint. Xiao Yao San is the cooler, non-heat-clearing base. Chai Hu Shu Gan San focuses more purely on moving Qi and relieving pain without Blood nourishment or heat clearing.
