Ba Zhen Tang: A Comprehensive Guide to Tonifying Qi and Blood

Earlier, we detailed the classic traditional Chinese medicine formulas—Sijunzi Tang and Siwu Tang. This time, we will introduce another commonly used formula, "Bazhen Tang" (from the Ruizhutang Experiential Formulas), which is made by combining the primary medicinal ingredients of Sijunzi Tang and Siwu Tang.

As the saying goes, "Siwu with Rehmannia, Peony, Angelica, and Chuanxiong cures all blood-related ailments. When Bazhen incorporates Sijunzi, its dual therapeutic effect on Qi and blood is highly esteemed." Bazhen Tang not only inherits the Qi-replenishing and spleen-invigorating effects of Sijunzi Tang, but it also possesses the blood-nourishing and blood-activating functions of Siwu Tang, making it a widely recognized formula for tonifying both Qi and blood.

Ba zhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) Composition and Clinical Application

"Bazhen Tang" is primarily composed of the main herbs found in Sijunzi Tang and Siwu Tang.

The main ingredients of Sijunzi Tang include Ginseng, Atractylodes macrocephala, Poria, and Licorice. It has the effect of replenishing Qi and invigorating the spleen, and is often used to treat symptoms such as spleen and stomach weakness, poor appetite, indigestion, abdominal bloating, loose stools, and fatigue in the limbs. (For details, please refer to: "Sijunzi Tang" TCM secret formula for regulating the spleen and stomach)

The herbs in Siwu Tang consist of Prepared Rehmannia, Angelica sinensis, White Peony Root, and Chuanxiong. Its main functions are to nourish and tonify the blood, promote blood circulation, move Qi, and harmonize Qi and blood. It has significant therapeutic effects in gynecological care, particularly for irregular menstruation, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, anemia, and a pale complexion. (For details, please refer to: "Siwu Tang" nourishes blood to improve the body)

Integrating the above, Bazhen Tang, which synthesizes the herbs of both formulas, is widely used for individuals with deficiencies in both Qi and blood due to its dual tonifying effects of replenishing Qi, nourishing blood, and removing blood stasis. Clinically, it is suitable for symptoms such as post-illness weakness, shortness of breath, reluctance to speak, palpitations, and irregular menstruation.

Main Efficacy of Ba zhen Tang

Ba zhen Tang (Hai Tian - Bazhen Tang), as a traditional formula for tonifying Qi and blood, has the following benefits:

  • Tonifies Qi and nourishes blood: Improves symptoms like Qi deficiency, insufficient Qi and blood, pale complexion, and limb fatigue.
  • Harmonizes various herbs for dual Qi and blood tonification: Integrates the Qi-replenishing function of Sijunzi Tang with the blood-nourishing function of Siwu Tang for a strong synergistic effect.
  • Promotes blood circulation and moves Qi: The Chuanxiong and Angelica components help promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis, which aids in improving irregular menstruation, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, and blood stasis symptoms.

  • Suitable for post-illness weakness and immune regulation: Enhances the body's physical recovery capabilities.

Contraindications and Precautions for Taking Bazhen Tang

Although Bazhen Tang (Nong's - Bazhen Tang) is a mild tonic formula, because it contains herbs that promote blood circulation and provide warming nourishment, the following contraindications must be noted before taking it:

  • Not suitable for those with poor appetite or severe diarrhea to avoid increasing the burden on the spleen and stomach.
  • Contraindicated for pregnant women, nursing mothers, and during menstruation: The blood-activating and stasis-removing properties of Bazhen Tang may have adverse effects on fetuses or infants, and may also increase menstrual flow and prolong the menstrual period.
  • Those with abnormal menstrual cycles (such as early periods, abdominal pain, numerous blood clots, or bright red menstrual blood) should stop taking it and properly diagnose the cause before using dietary supplements.
  • Use with caution if you have severe dizziness or restlessness: The blood-activating components of Chuanxiong and Angelica may exacerbate these symptoms.
  • Patients with high blood pressure, heart disease, and high blood sugar should use it under the guidance of a physician, as Prepared Rehmannia may affect blood sugar levels.
  • Contraindicated for individuals with inflammation and a hot constitution. The warming nature of Bazhen Tang can easily cause excess internal heat, leading to reactions like dry mouth, sore throat, acne, or early and excessive menstruation.
  • Use with caution for cold-related diseases or spleen and stomach deficiency-cold. Herbs including Prepared Rehmannia, White Peony Root, and Angelica are difficult to digest and may cause indigestion or diarrhea.
  • During the period of taking this formula, avoid raw, cold, spicy, and greasy foods, so as not to affect the efficacy of the medicine and increase the burden on the body.

When is it suitable to drink Bazhen Tang?

Generally, when symptoms such as a dual deficiency of Qi and blood, post-illness weakness, irregular menstruation, shortness of breath, fatigue, palpitations, insomnia, and a pale complexion are prominent, a moderate amount of Bazhen Tang can be taken for conditioning.

It is recommended to choose the correct timing and dosage under the guidance of a physician, avoiding long-term excessive use.

Who should not drink Bazhen Tang?

People with a hot constitution or heat-related illnesses, such as those suffering from dry mouth, sore throat, and acne, as well as pregnant women, postpartum women, nursing mothers, and women during menstruation, should not take it.

In addition, those with poor digestive system function, severe diarrhea, as well as patients with high blood pressure and heart disease should use it with caution or follow a doctor's advice.

What are the main ingredients of Bazhen Tang?

Bazhen Tang (Hai Tian - Bazhen Tang) consists of two classic herbal groups: Sijunzi Tang, composed of Ginseng, Atractylodes macrocephala, Poria, and Roasted Licorice; and Siwu Tang, composed of Prepared Rehmannia, Angelica sinensis, White Peony Root, and Chuanxiong. Ginseng replenishes Qi, Atractylodes invigorates the spleen, Poria promotes diuresis and calms the mind, and Roasted Licorice harmonizes the herbs; Prepared Rehmannia nourishes blood and Yin, Angelica promotes blood circulation and regulates menstruation, White Peony Root nourishes blood and softens the liver, and Chuanxiong promotes blood circulation and moves Qi.
