Frequently Asked Questions

What is Han Lian Cao? Are Nu Zhen Zi and Ce Bai Ye the same?
The pharmacopoeial name is Mo Han Lian (墨旱莲), also called Han Lian Cao. It is the dried aerial part of Eclipta prostrata. The pharmacopoeial name is Ecliptae Herba. Nu Zhen Zi is sweet-bitter and cool: nourishes the Liver and Kidney, brightens the eyes and blackens the hair. Ce Bai Ye is bitter-astringent and cold: cools Blood, stops bleeding, transforms phlegm and stops cough. Write Mo Han Lian or Han Lian Cao. Use caution in Spleen-Kidney vacuity cold.
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Han Lian Cao?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Mo Han Lian is sweet, sour and cold, enters the Kidney and Liver channels, and acts to nourish the Liver and Kidney, cool Blood and stop bleeding. It is used for Liver-Kidney yin vacuity, loose teeth, early graying, dizziness and tinnitus, sore weak waist and knees, yin-vacuity Blood-heat vomiting of blood, nosebleed and blood in the urine, bloody dysentery, flooding and spotting, and traumatic bleeding. Sweet-sour and cold, it suits yin vacuity with Blood heat—not Spleen-Kidney vacuity cold.
How do you choose Han Lian Cao versus Nu Zhen Zi? Can Ce Bai Ye replace it?
Eclipta is cold, cools Blood and stops bleeding, and also nourishes the Liver and Kidney. Privet fruit is cool, brightens the eyes and blackens the hair, and stops bleeding less strongly. Arborvitae leaf is astringent and cools Blood; it cannot replace supplementation by equal weight. Rubbing the stem and leaf until it shows an ink-green color is a feature of this herb. Commercial eclipta tea is not equal-weight pieces.
