Frequently Asked Questions

What is Xiang Ru? Are Huo Xiang, Zi Su Ye and Bo He the same?
Official Xiang Ru (香薷) is the dried aerial part of Mosla chinensis (Qing Xiang Ru) or Mosla chinensis ‘Jiangxiangru’. The pharmacopoeial name is Moslae Herba. Huo Xiang is acrid and slightly warm: transforms damp, stops vomiting and resolves summerheat. Zi Su Ye is acrid-warm: releases the exterior, disperses cold, moves qi and harmonizes the Stomach. Bo He is acrid-cool: disperses wind-heat and clears the head and eyes. Write Xiang Ru. Use caution in exterior vacuity with sweating.
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Xiang Ru?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Xiang Ru is acrid and slightly warm, enters the Lung and Stomach channels, and acts to induce sweating and release the exterior, transform damp and harmonize the center. It is used for summerheat-damp common cold, aversion to cold with fever, headache without sweating, abdominal pain with vomiting and diarrhea, edema and inhibited urination. Acrid-warm and sweating, it suits yin-summerheat without sweat—not exterior vacuity with spontaneous sweating or pure summerheat thirst.
How do you choose Qing Xiang Ru versus Jiang Xiang Ru? Can Huo Xiang replace it?
Both are official sources and similar in action; Jiang Xiang Ru is more aromatic. Patchouli transforms damp and resolves summerheat with weaker sweating; it cannot replace inducing sweating and releasing the exterior by equal weight. Mint is acrid-cool and cannot replace yin-summerheat without sweat.
