Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lian Qiao? Are Qing Qiao, Lao Qiao, Jin Yin Hua and Lian Qiao Xin the same?
Official Lian Qiao (连翘) is the dried fruit of Forsythia suspensa. The pharmacopoeial name is Forsythiae Fructus. Qing Qiao is harvested still green, steamed and dried—stronger to clear heat and resolve toxin, higher in forsythoside. Lao Qiao is fully ripe and split—lighter, better to vent heat and disperse wind-heat. Lian Qiao Xin is the seed, traditionally used to clear Heart heat. Jin Yin Hua is Lonicera flower bud: the same heat-clearing, toxin-resolving, wind-heat-dispersing class, but flower versus fruit. Write Lian Qiao or name Qing or Lao Qiao; do not swap in ornamental twigs or an equal weight of honeysuckle.
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Lian Qiao?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Lian Qiao is bitter and slightly cold, enters the Lung, Heart and Small Intestine channels, and acts to clear heat and resolve toxin, reduce swelling and dissipate binds, and disperse wind-heat. It is used for welling-abscess, scrofula, breast abscess, erysipelas, wind-heat common cold, the onset of warm disease, warm-heat entering the nutritive, high fever with vexing thirst, clouded spirit and macules, and hot painful strangury. Bitter and slightly cold—suited to heat-toxin sores and early wind-heat warm disease, not to Spleen-Stomach deficient cold or Qi-deficient sores already open with thin pus.
How do you choose Qing Qiao versus Lao Qiao? Is a special decoction needed?
The pharmacopoeia lists one set of actions. Clinically Qing Qiao is held stronger to clear heat and resolve toxin—swellings and warm-disease heat toxin favor it; Lao Qiao is light and outward—wind-heat colds and the onset of warm disease favor it. The market prefers Qing Qiao for its higher assay. It goes in the pot with the rest; first- or late-decoction is not routine. When the seed is used to clear Heart heat, write it separately at a smaller dose than the whole fruit.
