Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bian Dou? Are Bai Bian Dou and Bian Dou Hua the same?
The pharmacopoeial name is Bai Bian Dou (白扁豆). It is the dried ripe seed of Lablab purpureus (Dolichos lablab). The pharmacopoeial name is Lablab Semen Album. Bian Dou Hua is the flower: sweet and slightly cold, resolves summerheat, transforms dampness, harmonizes the middle and strengthens the Spleen. Write Bai Bian Dou. Use caution in cold-damp and qi stagnation.
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Bian Dou?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Bai Bian Dou is sweet and slightly warm, enters the Spleen and Stomach channels, and acts to strengthen the Spleen, transform dampness, harmonize the middle and resolve summerheat. It is used for Spleen-Stomach vacuity, poor appetite, loose stools, excessive vaginal discharge, summer-damp vomiting and diarrhea, and chest oppression with abdominal distension. Sweet and slightly warm, it suits Spleen-vacuity damp stagnation and summer-damp—not cold-damp, or qi-stagnation distension without vacuity.
How do you choose raw versus dry-fried seed? Can Bian Dou Hua replace it?
Raw seed leans to resolving summerheat. Dry-fried seed leans to strengthening the Spleen and transforming dampness, used for Spleen-vacuity diarrhea and excessive discharge. The flower is stronger for clearing summerheat; it cannot replace strengthening the Spleen by equal weight. Commercial bean soup is not equal-weight pieces. Raw seed must be cooked thoroughly to avoid unripe poisoning.
