What Is Lu Jiao Jiao?

Lu Jiao Jiao (鹿角胶; Lù Jiǎo Jiāo; Latin: Cervi Cornus Colla; English: deer antler glue) is the solid glue made by decocting and concentrating the antler of Cervus elaphus Linnaeus or Cervus nippon Temminck. In Chinese medicine it is a yang-tonifying herb. It is sweet, salty, and warm, enters the Kidney and Liver channels, and its core actions are to warm and tonify the Liver and Kidney, and to boost essence and nourish blood. In a decoction it must be melted separately. It is not Lu Rong. Velvet antler is the young, unossified, hairy antler. It more fiercely strengthens Kidney yang and boosts essence and blood. Price and safety margin differ. It is not Lu Jiao Shuang. That is the residue after the glue is boiled off. Warm tonification is milder. It is not E Jiao. Donkey-hide glue nourishes blood, enriches yin, moistens dryness, and stops bleeding. Warming yang is not its main work. Use a qualified source only. Do not boil wild antler at home. Yin-deficiency fire, and bleeding from heat, are contraindications.

It is used most often for three patterns:

  • Liver–Kidney insufficiency — cold sore lumbar region and knees, impotence, seminal emission
  • Deficiency-cold flooding, bloody stool, bloody urine — this needs pattern diagnosis; heat bleeding is a stop sign
  • Yin-pattern flat abscess with swelling and pain — this belongs with a practitioner

The usual dose is 3–6 g, melted. Sweet, salty, and warm, it is not a daily “Kidney antler glue” to keep increasing. A dry red tongue and steaming bone get hotter if more warmth is added.

When Kidney yang is insufficient and essence and blood are depleted, cold lumbar region, impotence, and deficiency-cold bleeding are common. Lu Jiao Jiao is sweet, salty, and warm. It tonifies, nourishes, and stops bleeding, which is why it appears in Liver–Kidney warming formulas. It warms and tonifies more than it clears. Yin-deficiency fire gets drier if more tonification is added.

Lu Jiao Jiao is not a catch-all Kidney or bleeding glue. In yin-deficiency fire or blood-heat bleeding, using it alone can assist heat and stir blood. Whether it belongs in a formula should be decided by a licensed Chinese medicine practitioner after pattern diagnosis and confirmation of the source.

1. Historical Records

This herb has a prestigious history in classic TCM literature:

  • Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (Classic of the Materia Medica) ranked it as a top-tier herb, noting its ability to treat exhaustion, lower back pain, weight loss, and certain fertility issues.
  • Ben Cao Gang Mu (Compendium of Materia Medica) further highlighted its role in tonifying the kidneys, boosting Yang energy, nourishing blood, and treating weak lower backs and knees.
  • Overall, it has been traditionally used for symptoms caused by Liver and Kidney deficiency, such as impotence, nocturnal emissions, severe fatigue, and various types of bleeding disorders.

2. Evolution of TCM Understanding

Over the centuries, different TCM physicians have highlighted varying strengths of Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue):

  • Some focused on its warming and tonifying effects for cold and weak constitutions.
  • Others emphasized its astringent properties, using it to manage bleeding or loss of vital essence.
  • Modern TCM practitioners emphasize that it is not a cure-all. For instance, people with "Yin deficiency with active fire" or excessive internal damp-heat should avoid using it alone.

Core Efficacies & Traditional Applications

Traditional Functions

Warms the kidney, supplements essence and blood, and stops bleeding. Apply to kidney-yang deficiency, essence-blood depletion, and deficiency-cold bleeding.

1. Primary Focus: Warming and Tonifying Liver and Kidney

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue) is primarily used to warm and nourish the Yang energy of the Liver and Kidneys.

  • Common Symptoms Addressed: It is traditionally used for people experiencing cold and sore lower backs and knees, icy hands and feet, chronic fatigue, pale complexion, nocturnal emissions in men, and light or pale menstrual flow in women.
  • Common Pairings: It is rarely used alone. To strengthen bones and tendons, it is often paired with Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark) and Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root). For boosting Qi and blood, it works well with Huang Qi (Astragalus) and Dang Gui (Angelica Root).
  • Who Should Avoid It: If you have "Yin deficiency with active fire" or internal damp-heat—characterized by a dry mouth, hot palms and soles, a yellow tongue coating, or constipation—you should not use this herb, as it can worsen your symptoms.

2. Secondary Focus: Replenishing Essence and Nourishing Blood

Another major traditional use is to replenish vital essence and blood, helping to recover from severe weakness and depletion.

  • Common Symptoms Addressed: Unexplained weight loss, a sallow or yellowish complexion, dizziness, palpitations, insomnia, severe uterine bleeding, and postpartum weakness.
  • Common Pairings: To enhance blood nourishment, it is frequently combined with E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) and Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root). To support digestion and help the body produce more blood, it is paired with Ren Shen (Ginseng) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome).
  • Who Should Avoid It: Because the glue is dense and sticky, people with poor digestion, frequent bloating, or loose stools should avoid it to prevent further upsetting their stomach.

3. Common Herb Pairings: Synergy

A classic combination is Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue) paired with E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin). Both are excellent for nourishing blood. While Lu Jiao Jiao leans towards warming the kidneys and astringing essence, E Jiao focuses on nourishing Yin and moisturizing dryness. Together, they balance each other out, maximizing blood nourishment while preventing the "internal heat" that might occur if you only took Lu Jiao Jiao. This pairing is specifically useful for chronic blood loss, but it requires a practitioner to get the dosage just right. Do not mix them casually on your own.

Modern Research

Modern research offers useful context, but Traditional Chinese Medicine prescribes on whole-pattern diagnosis rather than isolated compounds.

While TCM focuses on energy and holistic balance, modern science looks at chemical makeup. Here is a brief look at the modern perspective.

1. Main Chemical Components

Research shows that Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue) is rich in amino acids (like glycine, alanine, and glutamic acid). It also contains small amounts of peptides, collagen, and minerals such as calcium and phosphorus.

2. Modern Pharmacological Focus

Current scientific studies, mostly involving animal models, are exploring its potential to:

  • Regulate the immune system.
  • Support blood production (some animal tests showed a slight increase in hemoglobin levels).
  • Improve physical endurance.

3. Limitations of Modern Research

It is important to view these scientific findings with a grain of salt:

  • Lab Tests Do Not Equal Human Results: What works in a petri dish or an animal model doesn't always translate to the complex human body. Currently, there isn't enough large-scale human clinical data.
  • Different Doses and Forms: Modern labs often use highly concentrated extracts, which are very different from the traditional boiled doses of the raw herb.
  • Holistic Synergy: You cannot judge a traditional herb by a single active ingredient. The efficacy of Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue) comes from the complex, synergistic interaction of all its compounds working together, which is hard to replicate in isolated chemical tests.

Comparing Similar Herbs

1. Common Points with Similar Herbs

Let's compare it with Gui Jia Jiao (Tortoise Shell Glue). Both are deeply nourishing, target the Liver and Kidney meridians, and are used for a weak lower back and general frailty. Both are also common in restorative formulas and dietary therapy.

2. Core Differences

  • Nature and Flavor: Lu Jiao Jiao is warm, sweet, and salty (a warming tonic). Gui Jia Jiao is neutral, sweet, and salty (a Yin-nourishing tonic).
  • Core Strengths: Lu Jiao Jiao excels at warming Yang and treating "cold" type deficiencies. Gui Jia Jiao excels at nourishing Yin, anchoring floating Yang, and treating "heat" type deficiencies.
  • Target Symptoms: Choose Lu Jiao Jiao if you constantly feel cold, have icy limbs, or suffer from cold, aching joints. Choose Gui Jia Jiao if you experience night sweats, hot flashes, dry mouth, or hot palms and soles.
  • Contraindications: Lu Jiao Jiao is bad for those with internal heat. Gui Jia Jiao is bad for those with a cold, weak stomach and loose stools.

3. Summary of Differences

In short: Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue) is your go-to for warming up a cold, deficient body, while Gui Jia Jiao (Tortoise Shell Glue) is best for cooling and moisturizing a dry, Yin-deficient body. They cannot be used interchangeably.

Classical Formulas Containing Lu Jiao Jiao

Formulas vs. Single Herbs

  • Synergy is Key: A formula is a balanced team. The healing power comes from how the herbs interact, so a single herb cannot simply replicate a full formula's effects.
  • Holistic Balance: The exact dosage and combination in a formula affect the entire body. Never try to mix or alter these formulas at home based on internet articles.

Diet & Daily Home Use

1. Home Recipes and Teas

Lu Jiao Jiao Red Date Tea

  • Ingredients: 3g Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue), 2 red dates, a little brown sugar.
  • Method: Boil the pitted dates in water for 10 minutes. Stir in the glue and brown sugar until completely melted.
  • Best For: Mild winter support for cold hands and fatigue.
  • Avoid If: You have internal heat, damp-heat, or poor digestion. (Limit to 1-2 times a week).

Lu Jiao Jiao Millet Porridge

  • Ingredients: 5g Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue), 50g millet, 2 slices of fresh ginger.
  • Method: Boil the millet. Right before it’s done, stir in the glue and ginger until melted, then simmer for 5 more minutes.
  • Best For: A warming breakfast for those with weak digestion and cold kidneys.
  • Avoid If: You have bloating, loose stools, or a yellow tongue coating. (Limit to once every 2-3 days).

2. Preparation Differences

You generally buy the processed, solid glue blocks. When making teas or soups at home, do not boil the glue directly with other ingredients. It will stick to the pot and burn. Instead, you must melt it separately in a small amount of hot water (a process called Yang Hua), and then stir the melted liquid into your finished soup or tea.

3. Dosage and Cycle

  • Clinical Dose: Usually 5-10 grams, adjusted by a doctor.
  • Dietary Dose: 3-5 grams (keep it small for home use).
  • Cycle: Use for 1-2 weeks, then pause. If you notice signs of "heat" (like a sore throat or constipation) or bloating, stop immediately.

Contraindications & Safety Warnings

1. Who Should Avoid It

  • People with Yin deficiency and internal heat (dry mouth, hot flashes, red tongue).
  • Pregnant and nursing women (always consult a doctor before taking any herbs).
  • Children and the elderly, as their bodies are more sensitive.
  • Anyone with liver or kidney function issues.
  • People with known allergies to deer products.
  • Those taking medications for chronic illnesses (always check with a healthcare provider first).

2. Drug Interactions and Diet

Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue) may interact with certain Western medications, particularly blood thinners, blood pressure pills, and blood sugar medications. It can alter how these drugs are absorbed or amplify their effects. If you are on prescription meds, talk to your doctor to see if you need to space out the timing of your doses.

3. Side Effects and Overdose Risks

Taking too much can easily lead to "internal heat" (symptoms like dry mouth, mouth ulcers, and constipation) or digestive issues (like severe bloating and loss of appetite). If you experience any allergic reactions, continuous vomiting, trouble breathing, or a sudden worsening of symptoms, stop taking it immediately and seek emergency medical care.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lu Jiao Jiao

What is Lu Jiao Jiao? Are Lu Jiao Shuang, Lu Rong and E Jiao the same?
Official Lu Jiao Jiao (鹿角胶) is the solid glue made by decocting and concentrating deer antler. The pharmacopoeial name is Cervi Cornus Colla. Lu Jiao Shuang is the residue after the glue is extracted; it warms the Kidney and assists yang more mildly. Lu Rong is sweet-salty and warm: invigorates Kidney yang, boosts essence and Blood, strengthens sinew and bone, regulates the thoroughfare and conception vessels, and expels sore toxin; it is the young unossified, velvet-covered antler. E Jiao is sweet-neutral: supplements Blood, enriches yin, moistens dryness and stops bleeding; it is donkey-hide glue. Write Lu Jiao Jiao. Use caution in yin-vacuity yang hyperactivity.
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Lu Jiao Jiao?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Lu Jiao Jiao is sweet, salty and warm, enters the Kidney and Liver channels, and acts to warm and supplement the Liver and Kidney, boost essence and nourish Blood. It is used for cold aching of the lumbus and knees from Liver-Kidney insufficiency, impotence and seminal emission, taxation emaciation, flooding and spotting, blood in the stool or urine, and swollen painful yin abscess. Sweet-salty and warm, it suits Kidney-yang and essence-Blood insufficiency and yin abscess—not yin-vacuity yang hyperactivity or bleeding from fire-heat.
How is Lu Jiao Jiao taken? Can E Jiao replace it?
Melt it and take it with the decoction; do not boil it long with the other herbs. Donkey-hide glue leans to enriching yin and stopping bleeding; it cannot replace warming and supplementing the Liver and Kidney and boosting essence and Blood by equal weight. Antler residue is not equal-weight glue. Commercial deer-glue candy is not equal-weight pieces.
What is the usual dosage? Can it be eaten daily as a Kidney paste?
The pharmacopoeial dose is 3–6 g, melted and taken with the decoction. It is not a four-season “antler-glue Kidney paste.” Yin-vacuity fire only heats further as it supplements. Impotence and flooding need a practitioner to name a short course; it does not replace fertility and gynecologic assessment.
What are the contraindications? Can it be used in pregnancy?
Unsuitable in yin-vacuity yang hyperactivity, and in bleeding, cough and sores from internal fire-heat. Pregnancy needs a practitioner’s assessment; do not warm and stop bleeding on your own. Stop if dry mouth, sore throat or worsening bleeding appears. Yin abscess with high fever and heavy vaginal bleeding are emergencies.
Can Lu Jiao Jiao warm and supplement the Liver and Kidney, boost essence and nourish Blood?
It can help cold aching of the lumbus and knees from Liver-Kidney insufficiency, and yin abscess. Yin abscess joins prepared Rehmannia, cinnamon bark, ephedra and white mustard seed in Yang He Tang. It warms and supplements the Liver and Kidney, boosts essence and nourishes Blood—not a specific for every infertility or every bleed.
Can Lu Jiao Jiao be eaten daily as a yang, bleeding or abscess paste?
Kidney-yang and essence-Blood insufficiency may enter a short formula; yin-vacuity fire only heats further as it supplements. “Antler glue must invigorate yang and stop bleeding” does not replace fertility and bleeding assessment. Warming and supplementing the Liver and Kidney and boosting essence and Blood should name 3–6 g, melted.
How do you choose among Lu Jiao Jiao, Lu Jiao Shuang, Lu Rong, E Jiao and Gui Jia Jiao?
Deer-antler glue is sweet-salty and warm: warms and supplements the Liver and Kidney, boosts essence and nourishes Blood—cold aching lumbus and knees, and yin abscess. Antler residue is salty-warm: warms the Kidney, assists yang and constrains bleeding, more mildly. Velvet antler is sweet-salty and warm: invigorates Kidney yang, boosts essence and Blood and strengthens sinew and bone—stronger yang vacuity, smaller dose. Donkey-hide glue is sweet-neutral: supplements Blood, enriches yin, moistens dryness and stops bleeding—Blood vacuity and yin depletion. Tortoise-plastron glue is salty-sweet and cool: enriches yin, subdues yang, boosts the Kidney and strengthens bone—yin-vacuity yang hyperactivity. Yang-vacuity yin abscess favors Lu Jiao Jiao (Yang He Tang); a milder action favors Lu Jiao Shuang; marked yang vacuity favors Lu Rong with dose control; Blood-vacuity bleeding favors E Jiao; yin-vacuity steaming bone favors Gui Jia Jiao. They may be paired after pattern differentiation; yin-vacuity fire forbids Lu Jiao Jiao and Lu Rong.
Which herbs is Lu Jiao Jiao combined with? What are the representative formulas?
Yin abscess joins prepared Rehmannia, cinnamon bark, ephedra, white mustard seed and charred ginger in Yang He Tang. Taxation may join prepared Rehmannia and dodder after pattern differentiation. Write Lu Jiao Jiao 3–6 g, melted and taken with the decoction; do not replace it with donkey-hide glue by equal weight.
How do you choose and store Lu Jiao Jiao?
Choose flat square blocks, yellow-brown or red-brown, translucent, a glossy cut face, a faint odor and a slightly sweet taste. Moldy, moth-eaten, sour or collapsed soft lots are discarded. Store cool and dry. Buy pharmacopoeial Lu Jiao Jiao; do not replace warming and supplementing the Liver and Kidney and boosting essence and Blood with donkey-hide glue or antler residue by equal weight.
