Frequently Asked Questions
What is Sheng Jiang Pi? Are Sheng Jiang, Gan Jiang and Da Fu Pi the same?
Sheng Jiang Pi (生姜皮) is the dried outer cork of the fresh rhizome of Zingiber officinale, known as Zingiberis Rhizomatis Cortex. Sheng Jiang is acrid and slightly warm: releases the exterior, disperses cold, warms the center, stops vomiting and transforms phlegm. Gan Jiang is acrid-hot: warms the center, disperses cold, restores yang, unblocks the vessels and warms the Lung. Da Fu Pi is acrid and slightly warm: moves qi, eases the center and moves water. Write Sheng Jiang Pi. Early skin-water may use it; use caution in qi sinking.
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Sheng Jiang Pi?
Provincial standards and materia medica generally record Sheng Jiang Pi as acrid and cool, entering the Spleen and Lung channels, acting to move water and disperse swelling. It is used for early edema, inhibited urination and facial puffiness. Acrid-cool and skin-reaching, it suits early skin-water—not qi sinking or vacuity swelling without water-damp.
Does Sheng Jiang Pi need special processing? Can Sheng Jiang replace it?
Scrape the outer peel, remove impurities and sift dust. Fresh ginger is acrid-warm, releases the exterior and stops vomiting; it cannot replace moving water and dispersing swelling by equal weight. Kitchen scrapings must be free of mold and rot; they are not a self-dosed anti-edema specific.
