Frequently Asked Questions

What is He Shou Wu? Are prepared fleeceflower and Ye Jiao Teng the same?
Official He Shou Wu (何首乌) is the dried root tuber of Polygonum multiflorum. The pharmacopoeial name is Polygoni Multiflori Radix. Raw root resolves toxin, disperses abscess and moistens the intestines. Prepared root is processed with black-bean juice: supplements the Liver and Kidney, benefits essence and Blood, and blackens the hair. Ye Jiao Teng is the stem: nourishes Blood, calms the spirit, dispels wind and frees the collaterals. The prescription must say raw or prepared. Both carry a risk of liver injury.
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of He Shou Wu?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, raw He Shou Wu is bitter, sweet, astringent and slightly warm, enters the Liver, Heart and Kidney channels, and acts to resolve toxin, disperse abscess, check malaria, moisten the intestines and free the stool. Prepared root supplements the Liver and Kidney, benefits essence and Blood, blackens the hair and beard, strengthens sinew and bone, transforms turbidity and lowers lipids. It is used for Blood-vacuity sallow complexion, dizziness and tinnitus, early graying, and sore weak waist and knees. Bitter-sweet-astringent and slightly warm, it suits insufficiency of essence and Blood—not a remaining exterior pathogen, loose stool, or long excess courses.
How do you choose raw versus prepared He Shou Wu? Can Ye Jiao Teng replace it?
Raw root moistens the intestines and resolves toxin; toxicity and liver-injury risk are higher, and it is not a tonic. Prepared root is steamed with black-bean juice and is the form used to supplement the Liver and Kidney and blacken the hair. The stem calms the spirit and frees the collaterals; it cannot replace benefiting essence and Blood by equal weight. Commercial fleeceflower tea and wine are not equal-weight pieces.
