Frequently Asked Questions

What is Niu Huang? Are artificial and cultured calculus the same?
Official Niu Huang (牛黄) is the dried gallstone of Bos taurus domesticus. The pharmacopoeial name is Calculus Bovis, also called natural calculus. Artificial calculus is chemically synthesized. Cultured calculus is grown in living animals. The three cannot be interchanged by equal weight. Write natural or pharmacopoeial Niu Huang. Use caution in Spleen-Stomach vacuity cold and pregnancy.
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Niu Huang?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Niu Huang is bitter and cool, enters the Heart and Liver channels, and acts to clear the Heart, transform phlegm, open the orifices, cool the Liver, extinguish wind and resolve toxin. It is used for heat disease with loss of consciousness, wind-stroke with phlegm clouding, fright epilepsy with convulsions, mania, swollen painful throat, mouth and tongue sores, and abscesses and sores. Bitter and cool, it suits heat block with phlegm clouding—not Spleen-Stomach vacuity cold, or non-heat block.
How do you choose natural versus artificial calculus? Can artificial replace it?
Natural calculus is stronger for opening the orifices and extinguishing wind, and is costly. Artificial calculus is stronger for clearing heat and resolving toxin, and weaker for opening the orifices. It cannot replace natural calculus by equal weight in an An Gong Niu Huang Wan type formula. Commercial calculus tea is not equal-weight pieces.
