Frequently Asked Questions

What is Zhi Zi? Are Chao Zhi Zi, Jiao Zhi Zi and Huang Qin the same?
Official Zhi Zi (栀子) is the dried ripe fruit of Gardenia jasminoides. The pharmacopoeial name is Gardeniae Fructus. Raw Zhi Zi is more bitterly cold: drains fire, disinhibits damp, cools Blood and resolves toxin. Chao Zhi Zi is dry-fried to lessen irritation and clear heat to eliminate vexation. Jiao Zhi Zi is scorch-fried and leans toward cooling Blood to stop bleeding. Huang Qin is bitter-cold: clears heat, dries damp, drains fire, resolves toxin, stops bleeding and calms the fetus—a root, not a fruit. Write Zhi Zi, Chao Zhi Zi or Jiao Zhi Zi. Ornamental gardenia flowers are not the decoction herb. Use caution in Spleen vacuity with loose stool.
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Zhi Zi?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Zhi Zi is bitter and cold, enters the Heart, Lung and Triple Burner channels, and acts to drain fire and eliminate vexation, clear heat and disinhibit damp, cool Blood and resolve toxin; externally, disperse swelling and stop pain. It is used for heat disease with vexation, damp-heat jaundice, strangury with painful dribbling, Blood-heat vomiting and nosebleed, red swollen painful eyes and fire-toxin sores; externally for sprain and contusion pain. Bitter-cold and downbearing, it suits Triple-Burner fire-heat and damp-heat—not Spleen-Stomach deficient cold, loose stool or Stomach cold pain.
How do you choose raw, fried and scorch-fried Zhi Zi?
Heat disease vexation, damp-heat jaundice, strangury and sores more often use raw or fried Zhi Zi. Blood-heat vomiting, nosebleed, bloody urine and flooding more often use Jiao Zhi Zi. External sprain requires raw powder mixed for application. A weak Stomach prefers fried or scorch-fried to lessen bitter-cold irritation.
