Frequently Asked Questions

What is Rou Cong Rong? Are Guan Hua Rou Cong Rong, Suo Yang and Yin Yang Huo the same?
Official Rou Cong Rong (肉苁蓉) is the dried fleshy stem, with scale leaves, of Cistanche deserticola or Cistanche tubulosa. The pharmacopoeial name is Cistanches Herba. Both are included; the vascular bundles are arranged differently on the cut face. Suo Yang is sweet-warm: supplements Kidney yang, boosts essence and Blood, moistens the intestines and frees the stool; it is a cynomorium. Yin Yang Huo is acrid-sweet and warm: supplements Kidney yang, strengthens sinew and bone and dispels wind-damp. Write Rou Cong Rong or Guan Hua Rou Cong Rong. Use caution in loose stool and ministerial-fire excess.
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Rou Cong Rong?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Rou Cong Rong is sweet, salty and warm, enters the Kidney and Large Intestine channels, and acts to supplement Kidney yang, boost essence and Blood, moisten the intestines and free the stool. It is used for Kidney-yang insufficiency and essence-Blood depletion, impotence and infertility, aching lumbus and knees, sinew-bone weakness, and intestinal dryness with constipation. Sweet-salty, warm and moist, it suits Kidney-yang and essence vacuity with intestinal dryness—not ministerial-fire excess, weak Stomach with loose stool, or excess-heat constipation.
How do you choose raw versus wine-processed Rou Cong Rong? Can Suo Yang replace it?
Raw stem moistens the intestines more strongly. Wine-processed cistanche is more specific for supplementing Kidney yang. Cynomorium also supplements the Kidney and moistens the intestines; it cannot replace pharmacopoeial cistanche by equal weight. Commercial cistanche tea is not equal-weight pieces.
