Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tian Hua Fen? Are Gua Lou, Gua Lou Pi, Gua Lou Ren and Gua Lou Gen the same?
Official Tian Hua Fen (天花粉) is the dried root of Trichosanthes kirilowii or T. rosthornii. The pharmacopoeial name is Trichosanthis Radix, also called Gua Lou Gen. Gua Lou is the fruit of the same plant, Gua Lou Pi the peel and Gua Lou Ren the seed: they clear heat, transform phlegm, loosen the chest and moisten the intestines—not the fluid-generating, pus-expelling root. Same plant, different parts—not equal substitutes. Write Tian Hua Fen or Gua Lou Gen; do not dispense Gua Lou. Do not combine with aconite.
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Tian Hua Fen?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Tian Hua Fen is sweet, slightly bitter and slightly cold, enters the Lung and Stomach channels, and acts to clear heat and drain fire, generate fluid and stop thirst, and disperse swelling and expel pus. It is used for heat disease with vexing thirst, Lung-heat dry cough, internal-heat wasting-thirst, and sores and swollen toxin. Sweet-cold generates fluid, slightly bitter drains fire—suited to heat injuring fluid and hot toxic sores, not to Spleen-Stomach deficient cold, loose stool or pregnancy.
How is the decoction piece used? Is it a “pollen” supplement?
Cut thick slices or chunks into the decoction. The “fen / powder” in the name refers to the root’s starchy fracture—not bee pollen and not cosmetic starch. Externally it may be powdered and applied to sores. Do not mix it with Gua Lou, and do not place it in the same formula as Chuan Wu, Cao Wu or Fu Zi.
