Frequently Asked Questions

What is Dan Zhu Ye? Are Zhu Ye, Zhu Ru and Lu Gen the same?
Official Dan Zhu Ye (淡竹叶) is the dried stem and leaf of Lophatherum gracile. The pharmacopoeial name is Lophatheri Herba. It is not the leaf of Phyllostachys bamboo. Zhu Ye (fresh bamboo leaf) is a true bamboo blade: clears Heart heat, eliminates vexation and generates fluid—used in Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang. Zhu Ru is scraped bamboo shavings: clears heat, transforms phlegm, eliminates vexation and stops vomiting. Lu Gen is sweet-cold: clears heat, drains fire, generates fluid, stops thirst, eliminates vexation and promotes urination. Write Dan Zhu Ye. It is not kitchen bamboo sheath or ornamental bamboo leaf. Forbid in vacuity with cold.
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Dan Zhu Ye?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Dan Zhu Ye is sweet, bland and cold, enters the Heart, Stomach and Small Intestine channels, and acts to clear heat and drain fire, eliminate vexation and stop thirst, promote urination and free strangury. It is used for heat disease with vexing thirst, short red painful dribbling urine, and sores of the mouth and tongue. Sweet-bland-cold and leaching, it suits Heart-Stomach fire and Small Intestine damp-heat—not absence of excess fire, or bodily vacuity with cold.
How do you choose Dan Zhu Ye versus fresh Zhu Ye and Zhu Ru?
Mouth sores, red urine, heat strangury and clearing heat while promoting urination more often use Dan Zhu Ye. Heat-disease vexing thirst, residual qi-aspect heat and a Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang pattern more often use fresh Zhu Ye or bamboo leaf. Stomach-heat vomiting and phlegm-heat vexation use Zhu Ru. Pharmacies that receive “Zhu Ye” often dispense Dan Zhu Ye—specify on the prescription. The root is not the pharmacopoeial part; do not mix it in.
