Frequently Asked Questions

What is Huang Bai? Is it the same as Guan Huang Bai, Huang Lian or Huang Qin?
Official Huang Bai (黄柏) is the dried bark of Phellodendron chinense, also called Chuan Huang Bai. The pharmacopoeial name is Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex. Guan Huang Bai is the bark of P. amurense, a separate monograph with similar properties. Huang Lian is a Ranunculaceae rhizome, stronger to clear Heart and Stomach fire. Huang Qin is a Lamiaceae root, clearer of upper-jiao Lung heat. All three are bitter-cold and dry damp, but the part and focus differ. Write Huang Bai or Guan Huang Bai; do not swap in Coptis, Scutellaria or Berberidaceae “tu Huang Bai.”
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Huang Bai?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Huang Bai is bitter and cold, enters the Kidney and Bladder channels, and acts to clear heat and dry damp, drain fire and eliminate steaming, and resolve toxin to treat sores. It is used for damp-heat dysentery, jaundice with dark urine, vaginal discharge with itch, hot painful strangury, leg qi and limp wilting, steaming bone and taxation heat, night sweat, seminal emission, sores and eczema. Bitter-cold and descending, it is especially good to clear lower-jiao damp-heat and also to abate deficient fire—not for Spleen-Stomach deficient cold or patterns without damp-heat.
How do raw, salt-fried and charred Huang Bai differ?
Raw Huang Bai more strongly clears heat, dries damp and treats sores—damp-heat dysentery, discharge and rashes favor it. Salt-fried Huang Bai enters the Kidney and more clearly enriches Yin to downbear fire—Yin-deficiency fire, night sweat and steaming bone favor it. Huang Bai charcoal is fried to scorched black: less bitter-cold, slightly astringent to stop bleeding in damp-heat bleeds. Wine-frying is traditionally said to guide it upward. The script should name the form; do not self-steep it as a long tea.
