Frequently Asked Questions

What is Suan Zao Ren? Are Bai Zi Ren, Yuan Zhi and He Huan Pi the same?
Official Suan Zao Ren (酸枣仁) is the dried ripe seed of Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa. The pharmacopoeial name is Ziziphi Spinosae Semen. Bai Zi Ren is sweet-neutral: nourishes the Heart, calms the spirit and moistens the intestines to free the stool. Yuan Zhi is bitter-acrid and warm: calms the spirit, sharpens the wits, links Heart and Kidney, dispels phlegm and disperses swelling. He Huan Pi is sweet-neutral: resolves constraint, calms the spirit, invigorates Blood and disperses swelling. Write Suan Zao Ren and crush it before use. Use caution in excess heat and slippery diarrhea.
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Suan Zao Ren?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Suan Zao Ren is sweet, sour and neutral, enters the Liver, Gallbladder and Heart channels, and acts to nourish the Heart, supplement the Liver, quiet the Heart, calm the spirit, constrain sweat and generate fluids. It is used for vacuity vexation with sleeplessness, fright palpitations and excessive dreaming, profuse sweating from vacuity, and thirst from fluid damage. Sweet-sour and Heart-nourishing, it suits vacuity vexation insomnia—not excess pathogen with constrained fire, or slippery diarrhea.
How do you choose raw versus fried Suan Zao Ren? Can Bai Zi Ren replace it?
Raw seed leans to clearing vacuity heat. Frying until the seed puffs and darkens slightly is more often used to calm the spirit and constrain sweat. Both must be crushed before use. Arborvitae seed moistens the intestines; it cannot replace jujube seed by equal weight in loose stool. Commercial jujube-seed tea and pillow fillings are not equal-weight pharmacopoeial pieces.
