Frequently Asked Questions

What is Xi Xin? Are Bei Xi Xin, Hua Xi Xin and whole-plant Asarum the same?
Official Xi Xin (细辛) is the dried root and rhizome of Asarum heterotropoides var. mandshuricum, A. sieboldii or A. sieboldii var. seoulense. The pharmacopoeial name is Asari Radix et Rhizoma. Current standards use root and rhizome only, not the leafy whole plant, to lower unsafe-constituent risk. Bei Xi Xin from the northeast is the usual article. Do not combine with Li Lu (Veratrum; Eighteen Incompatibilities). Write Xi Xin; the dose must stay small—it is not “mountain ginseng.”
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Xi Xin?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Xi Xin is acrid and warm and enters the Heart, Lung and Kidney channels; tradition often marks it slightly toxic. It acts to release the exterior and disperse cold, dispel wind and stop pain, open the orifices, and warm the Lung to transform rheum. It is used for wind-cold common cold, headache and toothache, nasal congestion and discharge, allergic rhinitis and sinusitis, wind-damp impediment pain, and phlegm-rheum wheezing cough. Acrid-aromatic, it reaches the vertex and enters Shaoyin—suited to wind-cold and cold rheum, not to Yin vacuity with Yang hyperactivity or Lung-heat dry cough.
How do decoction and powder differ? Can it be used alone in a large dose?
Decoction is usually 1–3 g; powder is only 0.5–1 g per dose. The old saying “Xi Xin must not exceed one qian” mainly targets uncooked powder. It must enter a short compound formula; do not take a large single-herb dose or drink it as tea for long. External powder for the nose or as a rinse needs a practitioner. Do not replace root-rhizome with leafy whole plant.
