Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ban Xia, and is it the same as water pinellia?
Ban Xia (半夏) is the dried tuber of Pinellia ternata (Thunb.) Breit. The pharmacopoeial name is Pinelliae Rhizoma. Water pinellia is a different aroid sold as a cheap substitute; it is weaker for stopping vomiting and is not an equivalent. Ban Xia is a toxic materia medica. Internally only official processed slices should be used; never eat wild or fresh tubers as food.
What are the TCM properties and traditional uses of Ban Xia?
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Ban Xia is acrid, warm and toxic, enters the Spleen, Stomach and Lung channels, and acts to dry dampness and transform phlegm, descend rebellious Qi and stop vomiting, and dissipate clumps. It is used for damp or cold phlegm with cough, phlegm-fluid dizziness, wind-phlegm headache, vomiting, epigastric fullness and plum-pit Qi; raw material may be used externally for phlegm nodules. Internal use relies on Qing, Jiang or Fa Ban Xia.
Can raw Ban Xia be taken internally? Why must it be processed?
Raw Ban Xia is toxic. Do not swallow it or take raw powder at home. Irritant calcium oxalate raphides can numb and swell the mouth and throat, cause vomiting or diarrhea, and in severe cases laryngeal edema and breathing difficulty. Classical texts warn that incomplete washing “spears the throat.” Official processing markedly reduces this toxicity. Internal use should be limited to pharmacopoeial processed forms at prescribed doses.
